3-D printed food machines

Looking back, it Star Trek's replicator technology was much more microwave than printer.  Beaming stuff together from waves seems like a pretty good idea, and certainly cleaner than nozzles blowing carbs and proteins into a shape, but hardly something we're ready to crack in the near future.

It did send me thinking through our historical needs.  In water parched regions of the world, the amount of moisture used to cook is minimal, as is the amount available for clean up.  So small, dry foods might be the norm.  Considering the dry nature of the powder in the cartridges, it's more about choosing how much moisture is necessary to get the bits to stick together.

So pizza makes sense, though I wonder how tasty or melty powdered cheese can get.  Tappas style meals, petit fours for dessert.  Everything's tiny so you can eat them with chopsticks, or some other easily cleanable utinsel we haven't seen yet.

Semes like there's more there and I'm sure all of you will come up with better ideas.  I'll try to revisit after a bit more caffeine in my system.  And thinking on caffeine, I seem to be allergic to synthetic caffeine.  How in the name of all the things I use to keep me awake will my descendents thrive on printed tea and coffee?

As always, leave your thoughts in the comments below.  Let's figure out what's being served up at the future Orange Julius, Roman Delight and random sandwich shop in the food court of the ship ferrying everyone to a planet where giant plants will eat us like popcorn.
